15 Improvised Movie Scenes That Made the Final Cut

When we watch our favorite movie, we rarely think about the enormous amount of effort that went into creating it. Quite often, the filming process deviates from the initial plan. However, unscripted incidents and bloopers can surpass expectations and become a crucial moment in a film.

Bright Side found famous movie scenes that amazed millions of viewers…though they were never mentioned in the script.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

In this scene, Aragorn, skillfully performed by Viggo Mortensen, believes that his friends were killed. In a moment of great anger and hopelessness, he kicks a helmet and falls to his knees in despair. However, the reason was not the hobbits’ death but the fact that he broke 2 toes. The scene turned out to be so intense and realistic that the director didn’t even think about changing it.

In Rohan, Eowyn approaches the city gates to meet Aragorn. When she does, the flag next to her comes off the pole and flies away. The unscripted scene became a perfect metaphor for Rohan’s downfall. The director didn’t change the scene and even made extra shots later.

The Silence of the Lambs

When Dr. Hannibal Lecter tells Clarice Starling that he killed a census taker and “ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti,” he makes a squishing sound. It gives us the creeps. Even actress Jodie Foster got really scared because it wasn’t in the script. What an intense and eerie scene.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Johnny Depp got into the part of Captain Jack Sparrow so deeply that he improvised many of his scenes. When Sparrow teases Davy Jones and sings, “I got a jar of dirt!” you can see the confused faces of his fellow actors, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Their genuine reaction to Depp’s nonsense made the scene iconic.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Count Olaf is a colorful character, just as Jim Carrey is a talented comedian. While shooting a scene, he stuttered and quickly added, “Wait! Let me do that one more time! Give me the light again. Quickly, while it’s fresh in my mind!” Well, this speech was just perfect for a weird narcissistic man like Olaf.

Back to the Future Part II

In the movie, there is a well-known scene where Marty McFly is chased by a gang of thugs on hoverboards. According to the script, the gang should have flown up and through the windows of city hall. But a mistake in calculations led to one of the women hitting the pillar outside and dropping 30 feet to the ground. The actress survived but was seriously injured, and the scene made it to the final cut.

The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger had mastered the art of improvisation in different movies, and The Dark Knight was no exception. In the police office, Joker witnessed Gordon’s promotion. Everyone’s congratulating him, and all of a sudden Joker starts slowly clapping his hands. Ledger managed to express Joker’s whole personality in one scene, which was later called iconic.

Inglourious Basterds

In the scene when Nazi Colonel Hans Landa tries to choke Bridget, we can actually see Quentin Tarantino’s hands strangling Kruger for real. He wanted to show how it should be done. No wonder we can see real fear in her eyes, and she even fainted at the end of the scene. It was very strange being strangled by the director.

During the shooting of the film, Channing Tatum had to perform a real mental breakdown. He started beating himself and then broke a mirror with his head. The scene was unplanned, but it turned out to be very realistic and powerful.

There are several improvised scenes in the famous film, but this one is worth mentioning because even the director didn’t expect it to happen. In this scene, Rose and her fiancé were in the middle of a fight. Suddenly, actor Billy Zane furiously smashed a breakfast table to the floor. Kate Winslet didn’t even have to act her fear and confusion — those were real emotions.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

When Spider-Man again leaves Gwen Stacy to save the city, she called him “Peter!” When she realized her mistake, she covered her mouth with her hand. In fact, Emma Stone called out his name by accident. However, the incident fits perfectly in the movie plot and remains in the film.

In this comedy, Ben Stiller’s character is Derek Zoolander, a handsome but unintelligent male model. When J.P. explains why male models become perfect killers, Derek doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. Ben Stiller forgot his line. He just came up with the question he’d already asked: “Why male models?” The scene became a good example of Zoolander’s IQ level.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

During the whole film, Henry Jones is trying to convince his son that his beloved is actually a Nazi spy. When it turns out to be true, Indiana Jones wonders how he knew the truth about her. Sean Connery jokingly improvised the line: “She talks in her sleep.” The joke was perfect for his character, and it was kept in the film.

Thor: The Dark World

In this scene, Chris Hemsworth walks into the apartment and hangs his hammer on a coat hook. The director loved it and said that it was perfect for Hemsworth’s character and the movie’s atmosphere in general. The scene was later shot again specifically for the film, and now we can all enjoy Hemsworth’s sense of humor.

The Wolf of Wall Street

There are a lot of improvised moments in this movie. But the nude sex scene between Margot and Leo was not written that way. Martin Scorsese offered Margot a robe for shooting, but Margot believed that her character, Naomi, was all about her body and decided to do it without any clothes. She had 3 shots of tequila before filming.
