7 Celebs Who Opened Up About Their Mental Disorders to Make a Difference

Sometimes it’s very hard to admit to yourself that you have problems especially if they’re not obvious. This is especially true with Hollywood celebs — they feel like they don’t have anything to worry about. However, red carpet photoshoots portray a picture that is far different from reality. Some celebs have found the strength to open up about their mental struggles. Perhaps their example will help other people who are hesitant to ask for help.

Bright Side wants to tell you about some famous people who suffered from mental illnesses and how they were able to deal with them.

Mariah Carey, bipolar disorder

Recently, Mariah Carey told People magazine that she hid her diagnosis for 17 years because she was afraid it would ruin her career. In 2001, she checked into the hospital while suffering from a nervous breakdown and physical exhaustion. She was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. This mental disorder is defined as a period characterized by a good mood with bursts of positive energy, followed by depression, powerlessness, and loss of motivation. “I was ashamed of my diagnosis, refused to treat it, and made myself believe that my illness didn’t exist,” the singer said. For many years she lived in fear that someone would find out about her secret. According to Mariah, the last 2 years were the hardest time of her life. After that, she decided to open up about her problem and started treatment.

Stephen Fry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mel Gibson, and Sinead O’Connor all suffer from the same disease as Mariah Carey.
